For Members of the Australian Car Wash Association, maintaining a safe, compliant workplace is not just a legal obligation – it’s a business essential. Car wash operations present unique occupational health and safety (OHS) risks, from moving machinery and electrical systems to chemical handling, slip hazards and manual tasks. Being OHS prepared protects your people, your customers and the long-term viability of your business.
Why OH&S Preparedness Matters
At its core, OH&S is about systematically identifying hazards and minimising risks to workers, customers and visitors. Safe Work Australia principles make clear that businesses must take “reasonably practicable” steps to provide a safe workplace, including training staff, maintaining equipment and implementing clear procedures.
For car wash businesses, this translates into safer handling of chemicals, reduced slip hazards, proper equipment maintenance and clear traffic management. When done well, OH&S delivers tangible benefits: fewer workplace injuries, improved productivity, better staff retention and reduced operational disruption.
Importantly, strong safety practices also protect brand reputation. Customers are increasingly aware of how businesses operate, and a visibly safe, well-managed site builds trust and repeat business.
The Risks of Not Being Prepared
Failing to prioritise OH&S exposes operators to significant risk. Workplace incidents can result in injury, lost time, increased insurance premiums and costly legal action. Even a single incident can disrupt operations and strain already tight margins – particularly for small to medium operators.
Beyond financial impacts, there are regulatory consequences. Australian WHS laws apply to businesses of all sizes, and non-compliance can lead to investigations, fines and prosecution.
There is also a human cost. Poor safety practices can lead to serious harm, low staff morale and high turnover. In an industry reliant on consistent service delivery, this can quickly undermine business performance.
OHS Support Offered to ACWA Members
To support members, the Australian Car Wash Association offers a free OH&S Helpline through our partners at Safety First Professionals where you can take advantage of a free 20-minute consultation regarding all things ‘OHS’ – visit the ACWA website in the Members Section.
Victorian members can also utilise the OHS Essentials Program funded by Worksafe Victoria for Victorian car wash businesses. This no cost program is designed to simplify compliance and provide practical, industry-relevant support.
The program typically includes:
- A structured OHS framework aligned with Victorian legislation
- Customised safety documentation, including policies and procedures
- Hazard identification and risk assessment tools specific to car wash operations
- Guidance on employee training, induction and consultation
- Ongoing updates and support to help businesses stay current with regulatory changes
Benefits of Using the OHS Essentials Program
By utilising the OHS Essentials Program, Victorian members gain access to expert guidance without the need to build systems from scratch. The program saves time, reduces uncertainty and helps ensure your business meets its legal obligations. Importantly, it provides confidence—confidence that risks are being managed, staff are protected and the business is well positioned if inspected or audited.
In a high-risk, high-activity environment like a car wash, being OHS prepared is not optional. It’s an investment in safety, compliance and sustainable growth – and the OHS Essentials Program is a practical way to achieve it.
