Introducing the New ACWA Car Wash Feasibility Engine

28/08/2026 by Australian Car Wash Association

The ACWA Car Wash Feasibility Engine

A smarter way to evaluate your next car wash investment

For anyone considering an investment in Australia’s car wash industry, one question sits at the centre of every decision: will this business actually stack up?

To help answer that question with confidence ACWA has launched the Car Wash Feasibility Engine – a free, interactive planning tool available to ACWA members through the Members Portal on the ACWA website. It is designed to give prospective investors a rigorous, structured way to evaluate a car wash opportunity before committing capital.

Built around the real risks of new investment

ACWA developed the tool in direct response to patterns observed consistently across the industry. New investors frequently enter the market underprepared — relying on unverified seller projections, underestimating capital expenditure, or failing to scrutinise lease terms until it is too late. The Feasibility Engine addresses each of these risks head-on.

The tool operates across six integrated modules. Users begin by selecting their preferred wash format — automatic, self-serve, tunnel, hand wash, or combination — and are immediately presented with ACWA benchmark data for that format, covering typical capital expenditure ranges, expected daily throughput, and average ticket prices. Operational assumptions including staffing, wages, and operating days are layered in from the outset.

From CAPEX to five-year projections

The CAPEX module allows users to build a detailed site estimate across equipment, civil works, fitout, and contingency — with ACWA’s recommended minimum 20% contingency built in as a standing prompt. The Revenue module then models annual income against fixed operating costs including rent, utilities, maintenance, and insurance, producing a clear EBITDA figure that updates in real time as assumptions are adjusted.

For investors exploring a membership or subscription wash model — one of the fastest-growing revenue strategies in the industry — a dedicated module models penetration scenarios from conservative to best-in-class, showing precisely what a recurring membership program adds to the bottom line.

Stress-testing before you sign

Perhaps the most powerful feature of the Feasibility Engine is its Sensitivity module. Users can test their model against the variables that most commonly derail new car wash businesses: rain days reducing traffic, a competitor opening nearby, pricing pressure, equipment downtime, and escalating operating costs. Each factor is calculated individually and in combination, giving investors a clear picture of their downside exposure before a dollar is spent.

The tool concludes with a five-year P&L projection and a plain-language viability verdict — strong, moderate, or extended payback — based on the numbers entered.

A foundation for better decisions

The Feasibility Engine is not a substitute for qualified accounting, legal, or financial advice, and it says so clearly. What it provides is something equally valuable: a structured, informed starting point from which every professional conversation becomes sharper and every investment decision becomes more grounded.

It is free, available now, and open to ACWA members exploring a car wash investment.
